BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of a Principal, coordinate and perform a variety of technical library functions at an elementary school site; coordinate acquisition, circulation, distribution and storage of library books, textbooks, audio-visual materials and equipment; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials and access to digital resources; implement the District’s plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Library Media Technician series is responsible to perform specialized library functions and maintain the library collection and equipment including print and digital materials. Incumbents are responsible for classification, cataloging, circulation, inventory and recovery of library books and reference materials. The Library Media Technician – Elementary classification is assigned to an elementary school site and schedules the day to day operations of the school library under the direction of the Principal. The Library Media Technician – Secondary classification is responsible for budget related duties such as entering requisitions, preparing deposits, and reconciling budgets. This classification is also responsible for independently monitoring large groups of students in a multi-faceted environment throughout the school day. The Literacy Media Resource Technician differs from the other classifications by providing technical support in the use of software, literacy media and related equipment at a school site with a limited print collection.

Examples of Duties:

  • Perform technical library functions at an elementary school site, including organization, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and digital media; perform technical library functions in a highly computerized library environment; provide instructional support for students and staff using the library print and digital resources; promote student use of the library for research purposes and reading pleasure. E
  • Maintain school site library collection; conduct regular inventories of the library collection and equipment using online resources; catalog and process library books and other material online to include importing files from library bibliographic utility resources and vendors; prepare and print labels; affix identification and bar-code labels to materials and equipment; input related information into assigned computer database. E
  • Prepare District requisitions for library books, textbooks, periodicals, audio-visual equipment and other instructional materials to include securing price quotes, verifying shipments and monitoring library budgets. E
  • Coordinate the annual distribution of adopted textbook materials and digital content materials perform yearly inventory of textbooks in accordance with established timelines; ensure all students have the required textbooks; transfer textbook materials to and from other school sites. E
  • Curate the school site library collection; evaluate library books for purchase using curriculum standards, book reviews, staff recommendations and online collection analyses of current holdings; assess replacement needs; remove titles based on established weeding techniques. E
  • Schedule and facilitate class visits to the library, special events, book fairs and author visits. E
  • Present library information to students regarding the use of library resources to support District established information technology standards; collaborate with teachers to prepare and facilitate grade-level appropriate library presentations based on information technology standards; introduce genres of literature through book talks and read-alouds. E
  • Provide instructions and direct students in locating and selecting desired or needed materials from print and digital resources/databases, online encyclopedias using computerized catalog system; assist students in finding suitable reading materials; conduct student and staff library orientations as appropriate. E
  • Provide guidance and instruction to staff and students regarding the use of available library resource materials and equipment, how to source materials, and how to operate various equipment, computers and mobile devices; introduce students and staff to new library technologies, research websites and applications. E
  • Check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books and materials; evaluate and maintain orderliness of shelved materials. E
  • Compile thematic lists, reserve and retrieve textbook and library materials. E
  • Schedule and distribute electronic media related equipment and materials. E
  • Organize and prepare library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards; Maintain the library and resources in a neat, orderly and safe condition; assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior in the usage of materials and electronic devices in the library. E
  • Evaluate and maintain library materials and library equipment; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; ensure library equipment is operational by performing routine maintenance; assess need for replacement or repair and schedule service as needed; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; maintain records of lost or damaged books and equipment. E
  • Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; place holds on report cards for unpaid fines; collect books, materials and money, clear holds and notify appropriate staff of clearance.E
  • Perform general clerical work such as keyboarding, duplicating, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records, both digital and in print; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials. E
  • Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment within the library, including a computer, printer, barcode scanner, tablet, laptop, digital projector, document camera, fax machine and other digital devicesE
  • Communicate with a variety of internal and external contacts regarding library operations, materials, equipment and supplies. E
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants and volunteers.
  • Attend and/or facilitate a variety of in-service trainings, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college courses in library science; one year of general clerical work in a computerized environment preferably in an educational setting and one year of paid or volunteer library or media center experience. Qualifying coursework or additional related experience may be substituted as meeting the minimum qualifications.
