As a principal librarian not only do you have system-wide responsibilities but you may be managing a very large branch library, overseeing a department and/or a region of branches, you will be responsible for cross-training and supervising a diverse team of staff while supporting the mission and vision of the organization. This position is essential in evaluating, developing and leveraging opportunities for the communities in which it serves.

This is a classified management level class that reports to one of the following: Director, Assistant Director, or Deputy Director of the County Library. This class requires strong professional planning management and evaluation skill, ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative to develop and coordinate library programs and services.

The ideal candidate for this position would be someone who is a team player, a great communicator, a knowledge worker, possesses the ability to effectively manage staff and/or builds trusting relationships along with a thorough knowledge of conflict resolution.

Education and Experience
Possession of a master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certificate of foreign studies equivalency, AND five (5) years of full-time experience as a professional librarian, which includes two (2) years in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity.
Notes: Candidates must provide proof of educational requirements at the time of application. A master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Associate is highly desirable. Experience working in a public library is also highly desirable.
