$1,623.20 – $1,956.80 Biweekly

Library Assistant III positions perform a variety of paraprofessional library and clerical work in a branch library or a section of the Central Library; assist and instruct patrons in using library resources and facilities; explain library policies and rules; locate materials; research and answer the more routine reference questions; provide children’s services and conduct patron training classes; assist in the management of branch or section operations; maintain collections such as pamphlets, pictures, government documents, and map files; register patrons using the integrated library system; collect money; perform data entry and computer searches; lead the work of Library Assistant I/Library Assistant II positions and volunteers; assist with public programs and promotions; and perform other duties as assigned.


  • The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time and/or limited, hourly vacancies.
  • Library Assistant III employees work schedules may include evenings and weekends.
  • Some Library Assistant III employees may be assigned to one or more branches within the Library Department.
  • Library Assistant III employees may be required to grasp, carry, and lift books or book totes weighing up to 30 pounds; bend; reach overhead to heights of 80 inches with the assistance of a step stool; and stand for long periods of time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

1. Successful completion of a Community College Certificate in Library Technology.
2. Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 60 semester/90 quarter units).
3. Two years of full-time paraprofessional library experience, which MUST include assisting patrons in locating information, books, and articles by using reference materials, indexes, and electronic resources; and answering questions regarding the use and services of the library.


  • Library Assistant I, Library Page, and Library volunteer experience is NOT qualifying unless you have performed the duties as specified above in Option 3 (experience must be confirmed and documented).
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.


  • Proof of degree/transcripts or certificate, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • Proof of documented experience, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following: Confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug/alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check. The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
