Volunteer Job Title: Stacks Assistant

Department: Library

Reports to: Manager, Library & Archive

Position Overview: Assist library staff in maintaining book stacks

Specific Tasks:

Shelve newly cataloged materials, materials checked in after use by patrons, and materials used in library by patrons

  • Maintain shelves by periodically scanning books, periodicals and catalogs to ensure that they are shelved in proper order and re-shelving any that are out of order
  • Call to the attention of library staff any books that appear to be mis-cataloged, damaged, or in need of new labels
  • Help package Inter Library Loans
  • Help with small projects around the Library

Time Requirement: Must be able to volunteer sometime within these hours:

Monday & Wednesday 9:30 – 5:30

Friday 11:00 – 5:30

A minimum of four hours weekly is required to meet the workload

Qualifications: Physical: Ability to climb stairs and move heavy books on and off of shelves

Skills/Education/Experience: a fundamental knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system, and good attention to detail.
